Algeria suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to Malawi in their opening game in the competition on Monday. Goals from Russel Mwafulirwa and Elvis Kafoteka put Malawi 2-0 up by half-time and even before a stunned Algerian team could respond, Dave Banda added a third four minutes into the second half to seal a comprehensive win for Malawi.
Algeria were regarded as serious contenders for the African Cup title following their impressive showing in the world cup qualifying campaign. However their poor showing against Malawi in the opening game will not have given fans much cheer.
Coach Rabah Saadane will hope his side can recover from the shock defeat and win against Mali. Otherwise the North Africans may be on their way home even before the tournament has begun properly.
Meanwhile Mali will be high on confidence following their stunning comeback from 4-0 down against hosts Angola. A brace from Flavio Amado and goals from Gilberto and Manucho had put Angola 4-0 ahead in 74 minutes. However Mali responded dramatically scoring 4 goals in 11 minutes thanks to a brace from Seydou Keita and goals from Mustapha Yatabare and Fredi Kanoute to grab a vital point.
Mali boss Stephen Keshi will hope his side can overcome Algeria and book a place in the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Eagles were boosted by Keita’s recovery from a thigh issue prior to the Angola game. The Barcelona forward appears to be fully fit and should start in this game as well.
