Mali's preparation for the African Cup of Nations in a friendly against Iran was canceled to a waterlogged pitch. But Coach Jean Francois Jodar will be banking on the experienced trio of Frederic Kanoute, Seydou Keita and Mahamadou Diarra to guide the team through. All three players compete in the Spanish La Liga.

AJ Auxerre defender Sammy Traore has also be recalled to the squad. Traore last played a game for Mali in October 2006. The squad also features three players who were previously omitted from the provisional squad of 28. Jodar has named Goalkeeper Soumbeyla Diakite, Souleymane Dembele and Amadou Sidibe despite ignoring them initially.

Benin on the other hand look resigned to being the first casualty in the African Nations Cup live. Featuring in the Group of Death that also has Nigeria and Ivory Coast; the Squirrels face a tough task. New Benin coach Reinhard Fabisch has included 37 year-old defender Alain Gaspoz, who had retired at the end of last season. Gaspoz is currently the player-coach of an amateur team.

In their first appearance in the Nations Cup in 2006, Benin lost to South Africa, Morocco and Nigeria and crashed out in the first round itself. Benin qualified for the Cup as one of the three best runners-up having beaten Togo and Sierra Leone.
