A late strike from Fernando gave Malaga a narrow win over Villa in their group opener at La Rosaleda. Fernando scored the winner with ten minutes left on the clock after Villa keeper Brad Friedel could only parry Luque's cross. Friedel had earlier produced excellent saves to prevent Oscar and David Gonzalez from giving the Andalusian side the lead in the Peace Cup.

Malaga's Brazilian defender Weligton was involved in an early clash with Emile Heskey, which saw the former Liverpool striker stretchered off with a concussed head. The game against Atlante will also be played at La Rosaleda, thereby giving Malaga the support of their home fans again. If Malaga beat Atlante, it renders the final group game between the latter and Villa useless.

 

 

Atlante got an invitation to this tournament because Scottish giants Celtic pulled out due to Champions League commitments. The Iron Colts won the CONCACAF Champions League earlier this year, and thus earned the right to play in the FIFA Club World Cup alongside the likes of Barcelona and Estudiantes.

Atlante's star signing this summer has been Santiago Solari. The former Real Madrid and Inter Milan star has returned to the country where his brother and uncle excelled. The Mexican outfit have also signed defenders Clemente Ovalle and Diego Cervantes and forward Ever Guzman on loan.
