Malaga, along with Sevilla, are the two Andalusian sides in the tournament. The Boquerones also have home advantage for both their group games- against Villa and Mexican side Atlante. They finished eighth in La Liga last season.

Danish left back Patrick Mtiliga has joined from NAC Breda, while Uruguayan goalkeeper Gustavo Munua has arrived on a free transfer from Deportivo La Coruna. Espanyol winger Valdo has also arrived at La Roselda on a season long loan. However Portuguese star Eliseu has left to join Serie A club Lazio.

Premier League side Aston Villa were in contention for a Champions League place for most of the season, but eventually dropped out of the race, and finished 6^th. Captain Gareth Barry has left the Midlands club for cash rich Man City. O'Neill however has managed to sign winger Stewart Downing from relegated Middlesbrough. Martin Laursen has hung up his boots, and Villa look a little thin in defence without his imposing presence.

Aston Villa have played two pre-season friendlies so far. The first one, against Peterborough, was won 3-0. Andreas Weimann, Curtis Davies and Steve Sidwell were the scorers in that game. The other was against a spirited Colchester side, which the Villans drew 2-2. Midfielder Sidwell was again on target, with youngster Adam McGurk getting the other goal. With players like John Carew, Ashley Young, and Gabriel Agbonlahor in their ranks, Villa can certainly beat the best on their day.
