Mainz are currently ahead of their famed opponents in the league table. They have drawn both their league games so far- more than a satisfactory start for a newly promoted side. They held Bayer Leverkusen to a 2-2 draw at home in their season opener, and also managed to come away with a point after visiting Hannover in week 2.

Substitute Aristide Bancé broke the deadlock early in the second half against Hannover after being fed by Andreas Ivanschitz, but the lead lasted all of two minutes as Hannover replied immediately. Didier Ya Konan was fouled by Mainz defender Heinz Müller in the box, and Jiri Stajner made no mistake with the resulting spot kick.

Bayern had difficult opening fixtures, but fans of the Bavarian giants will be hoping that this Saturday will see Louis Van Gaal's side take all three points at Stadion am Bruchweg. Bayern visited last season's winter champions Hoffenheim in their opening fixture of the season, and came away with a point.

Bayern's last game was against Werder Bremen, which again ended in a 1-1 scoreline. Rising superstar Mesut Ozil gave Werder a shock lead on 39 minutes, but Mario Gomez equalised in the 72^nd minute, much to the delight of the fans at the Allianz Arena. Playmaker Franck Ribery will not be featuring in this match as he lacks match fitness, and is likely to be replaced by Jose Sosa.
