FYR Macedonia remained just above the foot of the table over the weekend as they held Norway to a 0-0 draw in Skopje. New boss Mirsad Jonuz would have been satisfied with the result in his first game in charge, but the draw made no difference as far as his side's chances of finishing in the top two in the group are concerned.

Jonuz was appointed after Srecko Katanec quit as Macedonia's manager following his side's 4-0 loss against Netherlands in April.

Meanwhile Iceland's hopes of challenging Scotland for a top two finish were dealt a serious blow when they lost to Netherlands at home by a 1-2 margin. Early goals from Nigel de Jong and Mark van Bommel put the Dutch in command and even though the game got a tense finish after Kristjan Sigurdsson pulled one back in the 88th minute, it made no difference to the eventual outcome. The Dutch became the first European side to qualify for the World Cup 2010 with this win.

Iceland coach Olafur Johannesson will hope his side can overcome Macedonia and stay in the hunt for the second place in Group Nine. The Scandinavians still have a chance to qualify for the world cup and with the likes of Eidur Gudjohnsen and Herman Hreidarsson in their ranks; fans will hope to have something to celebrate at the end of it all.
