Lyon are currently second in Group F with 5 points from three games and can assure themselves of a spot in the next stage should they win here. The French club started off with a 2-2 draw at home against Fiorentina. On Matchday 2 the club were held to a 1-1 draw by German giants Bayern Munich.

Lyon finally registered their first win in this group by trashing Steaua 5-3 on October 21. Two goals each from Karim Benzema and Fred and one from Kader Keita gave Lyon a deserving win. Arthuro, Goian and Petre scored for the home side, but Steaua were outplayed by a clearly superior side.

 

 

Steaua Bucharest had plenty of chances in the first half and capitalized well to conjure hopes of a scintillating win. However Lyon's midfield superiority won the game at the end of the day and the Romanian outfit was staring at early elimination from Europe.

The loss against Lyon in such tepid manner at the Steaua Stadium after leading 2-0 and 3-2 prompted Steaua coach Marius Lacatus to resign saying that he had been unable to forge a winning combination in the Champions League.

 

 

Lacatus had successful spells at Fiorentina and at Real Oviedo. Steaua club owner George Becali had promised not to sack the coach and ultimately things got untoward prompting the former to hand in his papers. The club is yet to name a replacement.
