The result, combined with Lyon's 5-1 thumping of Anderlecht at Stade Gerland, ensured that Claude Puel's side strolled into the group stages of the Champions League. Norwegian striker Thorstein Helstad gave Le Mans the lead just seconds before the end of the first half. Anthony Le Tallec made it 2-0 to the hosts on 53 minutes, and it remained that way until Damian Macaluso grabbed a late consolation goal for Nancy. Nancy have started well this season, scoring eight times in their first three games. Credit for the change must go to coach Pablo Correa, who has made it clear to his players that he merely does not want them to fling long balls upfront. Fans of the club will be hoping that Les Chardons can have a season similar to the 2007-08 one, where they narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.
