Against Strasbourg, OL were 2-0 up with less than a quarter of an hour gone on the clock thanks to an opener of the highest quality from Bafetimbi Gomis and Michel Fernandes Bastos’ 13^th minute strike. Le Racing then pulled one back through striker Nicolas Fauvergue’s 35^th minute effort. However Bastos struck again in the 72^nd minute to end Strasbourg’s hopes of progressing to the next round.

Last season, Lyon made their entrance into the competition at this stage and were knocked out by Metz. Claude Puel sent in a weakened first team and Metz used it to their full advantage as they produced a giant killing act. Goals from Victor Mendy, Sebastian RenouardandRomain Rocchi gave Metz a stunning 3-1 win. Defender Cris scored the only goal of that game for OL.

Metz’s last league game saw them beat Ajaccio 2-0 in December. Goals in either half from Romain Rocchi and Papiss Cisse allowed Les Grenats to get the better of their opponents. Senegalese forward Cisse no longer plies his trade for the club, having made a move to Germany in the opening days of the winter transfer window.

Metz have conceded only one goal in three League Cup games prior to this meeting against Lyon. In the first round, they beat Bastia 1-0, with Cisse’s first half penalty proving to be the difference between the two sides. Tours took the lead against them in the second round, but Metz scored twice in the second half to complete a come back win. Pascal Johnsen and Cheikh Gueye were on target when Metz beat Valenciennes 2-0 in the third round.
