Manager Claude Puel will be keen to make an early statement of intent with Fiorentina bound to provide a stern challenge for both Lyon and Liverpool to finish inside the top two of the group table and progress to the next round.

The French giants have never failed to progress past the group stages in their last six European campaigns but Puel will be aware that his side will have to be at their best throughout the group stage if they are to extend the streak to seven seasons.

Both the teams were clubbed into the same group last season with Lyon staging a late comeback in their opening group game against Fiorentina to secure a 2-2 draw at home before beating the Italian side 2-1 in the return leg and progress to the knockout stage where they suffered a 6-3 aggregate defeat to eventual champions Barcelona.

Fiorentina on the other hand have not progressed to the last 16 of the competition since finishing third in the second group stage of the 1999-2000 season. The Italian side have not suffered defeat in their last eight away matches on the European stage but Cesare Prandelli will be aware that his side will have to improve its home form if they are to progress to the next round.
