Lyon face a tough task in their UEFA Champions League playoff round with Belgian club Anderlecht keen to qualify for the group stage of the competition for the first time in three years. Lyon had a disappointing last season with the club finally relinquishing their hold on the French Ligue 1 after winning the league for seven successive seasons. There were further disappointments in the UEFA Champions League after Lyon were thrashed 5-2 in the second leg of their first knockout round tie by Barcelona.

The French giants have qualified for the group stage of the competition for the last nine seasons but manager Claude Puel will be aware that his side will have to be at their best if they are to progress ahead in the competition.

Anderlecht on the other hand will be looking to qualify to the group stages of the competition for the first time in three years. The Belgian club suffered a narrow 3-4 aggregate defeat to BATE Borisov in the second qualifying round last season after they had slipped up against Fenerbahce in the third qualifying round during the 2007-08 season.

Anderlecht have started their European campaign on an excellent note, comfortably beating Turkish side Sivasspor 6-3 on aggregate while winning their first three matches in their domestic league. Manager Ariel Jacobs will be hoping that his side can maintain their form against Lyon and be in a strong position to qualify to the group stage following their match on Wednesday.
