Lyon v Stuttgart LiveOlympique Lyonnais will be looking to chase down Rangers to the qualification spot when they meet Stuttgart in their next Champions League clash at Stade de Gerland on Wednesday.
Lyon had comfortably defeated Stuttgart by a margin of 2-0 in Germany, registering their first win of the campaign after losing their first two matches to Barcelona and Rangers without scoring a single goal. With Rangers favorites to lose the match against Barcelona and Lyon scheduled to play the Scottish club in the final match of the group stage, manager Alain Perrin will be looking to close down the gap between the two teams by completing a double over Stuttgart on Wednesday.
Should Lyon fail to qualify for the knockout stages, it will be for the first time since 2002 that the French club would have failed to do so, increasing pressure on Perrin. Lyon have had a good record playing against German clubs in France, winning five and losing just two matches in the last eight meetings.
Meanwhile Stuttgart face a must win situation on Wednesday in order to sustain their European dream for some more time. While a loss would effectively eliminate Stuttgart from the Champions League, the German club would face an uphill task of qualifying for the UEFA Cup, since Lyon would have taken a six point lead with just two more games remaining.
However it is not all doom and gloom for Stuttgart, with clubs having bounced back from losing their first three matches to qualify for the knockout stages. Newcastle United had performed the seemingly impossible task in the 2002-03 campaign while Bundesliga counterparts Bayer Leverkusen repeating it the same season.
