The Reds fared badly in their last game being held to a 0-0 draw by a determined Fulham team. The draw meant they dropped two points and in the process forfeited the chance to go two points clear over Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table.

Manager Rafael Benitez will be boosted by the return of Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool skipper missed his side's game against Fulham, but was instrumental in their win against Marseille in the Champions League, which saw Liverpool make it to the next stage in that competition.

 

 

Liverpool are being seen as genuine title contenders this season and cannot afford to drop points against the so-called weaker teams like West Ham.

The Hammers reversed a recent miserable run of results in the Premiership with a 0-1 win away from home at Sunderland. Valon Behrami's first goal in a West Ham shirt eased the pressure on manager Gianfranco Zola and also consolidated their position in the league table.

 

 

The win saw West Ham move to the 13th spot on the table with 17 points from 14 games. However Zola knows they need to keep winning games since the difference in points is very minimal. All games played at the bottom of the table could turn out to be six-pointers and hence could be critical in determining the fate of the bottom three. In a positive development striker Carlton Cole has inked a deal that extends his stay at Upton Park by a further five years.
