The Reds were saved from embarrassment in the first leg by goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who affected a string of superb saves to keep his team in the hunt. Reina also saved Dante Bonfim's penalty in what was a forgettable game for Liverpool.

Standard Liege gave the Reds a run for their money even while they did not have the services of defender Oguchi Onyewu, who was suspended for this clash and striker Milan Jovanovic, who was laid low with an injury.

 

 

Manager Rafa Benitez will be concerned with the lack of finishing from his side, but they will be buoyed by the two successive wins in the Premiership. Skipper Steven Gerrard is in fine form for Liverpool scoring the winner against Boro over the weekend.

Bentiez will also hope his strike partnership of Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane fires in this crucial game. His move to sign Gareth Barry seems off and he has turned his attention to Alberto Reira, but even that move appears unlikely given the asking fee.
