Marseille last played Liverpool in England 13 months ago and the French club left Anfield with all three points thanks to a 77th minute goal from Mathieu Valbuena. Marseille will have to repeat that result once again this season if they are to have any hopes of maintaining their hopes of qualifying to the knockout stage.

Just three points from their first four matches has left Marseille five points behind the second qualification place and with Atletico Madrid expected to win against PSV Eindhoven, manager Eric Gerets will be hoping that his side will manage to close down the gap at second place to just two points and hope that Liverpool drop points against PSV as he looks to beat the odds and help his side to qualify for the knockout stage.

 

 

Liverpool on the other hand will be looking to build on their late goal that saw them snatch a draw against Atletico in their last match. The English giants looked set for a shock defeat after going behind to Maxi Rodriguez's goal in the first half but Steven Gerrard scored the equalizer five minutes into stoppage time to collect a point for his side.

Liverpool have already tasted victory over Marseille this season, having secured a narrow 2-1 victory in their opening group match with Gerrard scoring a brace in the first half after Lorik Cana had given Marseille an early lead.
