The Reds managed to register only their second win of the group stage with a 1-0 win over Debrecen in their last match but it was not enough as Fiorentina secured the second qualification spot with a similar victory over Lyon.

With Debrecen having lost all of its five matches, it will be Liverpool who will be playing in the Europa League in the next round. While there is nothing left except pride to play for, Liverpool will be hoping to ruin Fiorentina’s hopes of finishing at the top of the group table by avenging their 2-0 defeat suffered early in the campaign. Stevan Jovetic scored a brace in the first half to condemn Liverpool to a shock defeat at Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Manager Rafa Benitez is expected to rest a number of his key players including Steven Gerrard with one eye on Liverpool’s vital game against Arsenal next weekend. Fernando Torres remains out of contention with a groin injury and is not expected to return for at least another week.

Fiorentina too will be missing some of their key players with Dario Dainelli and Juan Vargas both out of action for at least a couple of weeks while Marco Marchionni misses out with a thigh injury. The Viola secured a vital win over Lyon in their last match with Vargas scoring the vital goal that put Fiorentina in the knockout stage.
