Seven time winners Liverpool kick off their 2008-09 League Cup campaign when they take on Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday in a third round tie. Last season, Liverpool beat Reading 4-2 away in the third round, followed by a home win against Cardiff City in the fourth. Last season, Crewe failed to make it past the first round , losing by three goals to Hull City. This season, they beat Barnsley 2-0 in the first round, and followed it up by eliminating Bristol Rovers in the second round. The reward is a lucrative away tie to Anfield, which will bring in some welcome cash to the club. Anthony Elding was on target in both the Cup games, but the striker invited some criticism from assistant manager Neil Baker when he refused to sit on the bench after being substituted against Colchester in a recent League One game. The away form of the Railwaymen has not been very encouraging- Leeds, Hereford United and Carlisle United have all handed them defeats.
