It’s a familiar and much-dreaded encounter for both sets of fans as Liverpool prepare to welcome Chelsea for the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal at Anfield on Wednesday. This is the fifth time in four seasons that Liverpool and Chelsea meet in the knock out stages of Europe's premier club competition. The difference this time is that unlike 2005, 2006 and 2008, the clubs clash in the quarterfinals instead of the Champions League semi-final stage as was the case previously.

Another difference is that Chelsea have yet another new boss in charge this time in the form of  Guus Hiddink. Liverpool though will be hopeful of turning the tables on their much vaunted foes mainly due to the prolific form of their two main star players - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

 

 

Steven Gerrard in particular has hit the purple patch as the Reds revived their bid to claim their first domestic title since 1990. Torres has also been in good form since returning from a groin injury that kept him out of the side for almost six weeks.

Manager Rafa Benitez will hope his side does not commit the same mistakes as last year when a Jon Arne Riise own goal gave Chelsea a valuable away goal and helped them win 4-3 on aggregate. Liverpool progressed to this stage with an emphatic 5-0 aggregate win over Real Madrid in the last 16 stage.

 

 

Meanwhile Chelsea will also be confident of winning this tie as the second leg is to be played at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have had a mixed season so far, but have improved since the sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari. Guus Hiddink has insisted that he will be in charge for just this season, but that could change in the summer. Chelsea beat Juventus 3-2 on aggregate in the last 16 contest.
