The Portuguese giants trailed Liverpool 1-0 at the interval in the first leg, but recovered to post a 2-1 victory thanks to Oscar Cardozo’s brace from the spot. The Reds took the lead through Danish defender Daniel Agger, but were reduced to ten men when Ryan Babel received his marching orders from the referee.

Just before the hour mark, Cardozo’s free kick hit the post and in the ensuing melee, Pablo Aimar was fouled by Emiliano Insua. The referee pointed to the spot, and Paraguayan Cardozo stepped up to hit a firm and low shot past Pepe Reina.

Twenty minutes later, Jamie Carragher was penalised for handing Angel Di Maria’s cross and Cardozo was given the responsibility to put Benfica ahead. Reina guessed the wrong way and Cardozo, in contrasting style to his equaliser, gently sent the ball in from twelve yards out.
