Both the teams played out a hard fought 1-1 draw in their last match at Vicente Calderon stadium. Liverpool had taken the lead through Robbie Keane early in the first half and looked on course for a third straight win in the tournament but Simao equalized for Atletico with just seven minutes remaining on the clock.

The draw leaves both the teams level on seven points and a victory for either team will be enough for them to qualify out of the group should PSV Eindhoven fail to win against Marseille in their next match.

 

 

Fernando Torres faces a race against time to get fit for the clash with the Spanish striker missing out on a return to Vicente Calderon, where he plied his trade for nearly six years, with an injury.

There will be reunions for Luis Garcia and Florent Sinama Pongolle who were a part of Liverpool's Champions League winning campaign back in 2004-05 season. Garcia scored a vital goal for Liverpool in the semi final against Chelsea that helped them progress to the final and will be hoping to prove manager Rafa Benitez wrong in ditching him by repeating the effort for Atletico on Tuesday.

 

 

Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre will be hoping to lift some pressure off his job by a morale boosting victory over Liverpool in the midweek. A poor start to the season has seen Atletico slip to 10th in the La Liga table with the club managing to collect just one point from their last four matches, though they secured a narrow victory over Orihuela in the midweek Copa del Rey fixture.
