Liverpool’s title ambitions were all but buried at the Riverside where they went down 2-0 to Middlesbrough with Xabi Alonso scoring an own goal and Tuncay grabbing the other. The loss leaves the Reds 7 points adrift of Man United who have a game in hand.

The Reds were rocked by news that CEO Rick Parry will be leaving the club at the end of the season. Fans will be relieved that it is Parry who is departing from Anfield and not manager Rafael Benitez as was rumored ahead of their side's Champions League clash against Real Madrid last week.

 

 

However Benitez will be concerned about the fitness of Fernando Torres, who sustained an ankle injury in his side's 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League last Wednesday. Another fitness worry will be Steven Gerrard, who has recovered from a hamstring injury and is expected to feature in this game. Daniel Agger continues to be sidelined with a back issue. Benitez is expected to make some changes to his side as the congested fixture schedule means the players may be fatigued.

Meanwhile Sunderland did not play during the weekend so manager Ricky Sbragia is expected to have a fully fit side at his disposal for the trip to Anfield. Phil Bardsley returns from suspension after missing his side's 0-0 draw against Arsenal last week.

 

 

Paul McShane has also recovered from a hamstring problem, while Teemu Tainio is also available after recovering from a knee injury. Meanwhile in some hard news for Black Cats fans, Djibril Cisse's move to Sunderland could be in jeopardy as the asking price for the French striker has increased by £3 million due to the ongoing credit crunch. However Sbragia is hoping to seal the deal and also that Cisse will be fit to travel on Tuesday after recovering from an ankle injury.
