Russian coach Guss Hiddink has chosen to ignore the claims of Oleg Ivanov of Samara and Spartak Moscow's Alexander Pavlenko in naming his squad. The Russian boss has been linked with the Chelsea job, but has ruled himself out saying there is much work to be done in Russia.

Russia came through a qualifying group that also included England. Hiddink has masterminded campaign involving South Korea and Australia in the World Cup, so one can expect the same degree of intensity in this campaign as well.

However there is concern over star striker Pavel Pogrebnyak's fitness. The Zenit St Petersburg hit man was pivotal for his side's winning campaign in the UEFA Cup scoring 10 goals although he misses the final due to suspension.

 

 

Pogrebnyak apparently sustained a serious knee injury in a 2-1 friendly win over Serbia in which he scored as well. Alexander Kerzhakov and Dmitry Bulykin have already revealed that they are ready to replace the striker in Euro 2008 should it be necessary.

Lithuania are in woeful form having lost 2-0 to the Czech Republic in a friendly game thanks to Jan Koller's brace. The loss could have been much worse, but goalkeeper Zydrunas Kacemarska saved the blushes for his side with plenty of wonderful saves.
