Lille upset Turkish giants Fenerbahce in the Round of 16. Les Dogues won the first leg 2-1 thanks to goals from Florent Balmont and Pierre-Alain Frau, but were heading for an exit on the away goals rule after Emre’s first half strike in the return leg in Istanbul. Adil Rami then popped up with an equaliser five minutes from time to send Fenerbahce out of the tournament as Lille won 3-2 on aggregate.

Liverpool saw off the challenge of Romanian champions Unirea Urziceni 4-1 on aggregate. A solitary David Ngog goal gave the Reds a 1-0 advantage going into the return leg in Bucharest, where they scored thrice to end Unirea’s hopes of progressing. Javier Mascherano is walking a defensive tightrope as a booking will keep him out of the second leg.
