After seeing a three game winning streak in Europe halted by Red Bull Salzburg on Match Day 2, Villareal travel to the Italian capital city of Rome to take on Lazio in a Group G encounter on Thursday night. Lazio crushed Bulgarian side Levski Sofia 4-0 on Match Day 2. Brazilian midfielder Matuzalem opened the scoring midway through the first half, and Argentine striker Mauro Zarate made it 2-0 in first half injury time. Mourad Meghni and Tommaso Rocchi also scored in the second half as Lazio made light work of their opponents.

Matuzalem was also on the score sheet when Lazio drew 1-1 against high flying Sampdoria in Serie A on Sunday. Serbian defender Alexsandar Kolarov is available for selection after being suspended for the first two group games against Red Bull Salzburg and Levski.

Villareal beat Levski 1-0 at home in their Group G opener, but were forced to taste defeat by Red Bull Salzburg on Match Day 2. Goals in either half from Marc Janko and Somen Tchoyi allowed the Austrians to beat Ernesto Valverde’s side 2-0 at home.

Villareal were beaten 2-1 by Segunda Division champions Xerez on Sunday, a result that saw the Yellow Submarines sink to the bottom of La Liga. Robert Pires gave Villareal the lead in the 18^th minute, but Xerez hit back through Mario Bermejo and Perez Antonito to claim a historic win. After seven games, Villareal have only picked up three points, a terrible start for a side that boasts of the likes of Pires, Marcos Senna, Santi Cazorla and Giuseppe Rossi in their ranks.
