Croatia's crushing 5-1 defeat to England in their last qualification match meant that their destiny was out of their hands with Ukraine just two points behind and having played a game less. Ukraine took full advantage of their game in hand to secure a vital 1-0 win over England on Saturday and move into the play offs spot.

The result means that Croatia must now beat Kazakhstan in their final game and hope that Ukraine do not win against Andorra on Wednesday. However with Ukraine expected to secure a comfortable victory over the group's whipping boys, Croatia's hopes of participating in a World Cup must wait for another four years.

Meanwhile Kazakhstan will be ending their qualification campaign in fifth position. Bernd Storck's side have managed just two wins from their nine games so far but the Kazak coach will be satisfied with his side's performances and will be glad not to have finished the campaign at the foot of the table.

Kazakhstan go into the match following a heavy 4-0 defeat to Belarus on Saturday. Timofey Kalachev scored a brace in the second half after Maxim Bordachev had given Belarus the lead in the first half while Leonid Kovel also managed to get himself on the score sheet.
