City were embarrassed 2-0 by Orlando Pirates in their opening game. The home side were without their South African stars Teko Modise, Katlego Mashego and Benson Mhlongo, but still managed to run out 2-0 winners. Lucas Thwala opened the scoring from the spot late in the first half after Ben Mee had fouled Frank Olivier in the box.

Substitute Phenyo Mongala capped a dream debut when he doubled Pirates' lead in the 56^th minute. For City, Martin Petrov had a good outing on the left flank. New signings Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz did not start against Pirates, but they may figure against Kaizer Chiefs if Hughes feels their fitness levels are up to scratch.

Kaizer Chiefs finished third in the ABSA Premiership last season. The Amakhosi will be keen to replicate the result of the Amabhakabhaka, whom they will face in a Soweto derby in Port Elizabeth on Thursday. The winner of the derby between Chiefs and Pirates will take on City in the final.

Chiefs, coached by Serbian Vladimir Verzemovic, received a boost when it was announced that Mthokozisi Yende and Zhiamo Jambo were on the road to recovery from their respective injuries. The biggest threat to City will come from South African international Siphiwe Tshabalala, Chiefs' 2008-09 player of the season.
