The two sides have met twice in the past, with both games going Japan’s way. Their most recent meeting was nearly three years ago in August 2007. On that occasion, goals from Marcus Tulio Tanaka and Koji Yamase gave the Samurai Blue a 2-0 win. Japan also emerged victorious by the same score line when the two sides clashed in the 2001 Confederations Cup. Takayuki Nigata scored a brace for the Japanese that day in Niigata.
