The Elephants topped Group B with 4 points to advance to the quarterfinals. Ivory Coast began badly with a surprise 0-0 draw against Burkina Faso, but made up for that by beating Ghana 3-1 in their next game. Gervinho, Siaka Chico Tiene and Didier Drogba scored effortlessly in that game to ensure that Gyan's last-minute penalty was a mere formality.

Coach Vahid Halilhodzic will be delighted with his team's efforts and will hope they can make it to their third successive African Nations Cup semi finals on Sunday. The onus will once again be on Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and Gervinho to lead the attack and repulse the North Africans.

Meanwhile Algeria qualified for the quarterfinals on a controversial note after playing out a 0-0 draw against Angola. The Desert Hawks were beaten 3-0 by the Malawian minnows in their first game, but bounced back to beat Mali 1-0. In their final game they played out a 0-0 draw against hosts Angola.

Algeria and Mali finished level on points, but the former progressed thanks to their 1-0 victory over the latter in the group stages. Algeria boss Rabah Saadane will hope his World Cup-bound side can stretch Ivory Coast, although goal scoring remains a massive problem as the team has scored only one goal in this tournament so far.
