These two sides have met in the World Cup before. That was nearly sixty years ago in Sao Paulo. Paraguay needed a win to qualify from Group 3, but were beaten 2-0 by the Italians, who had lost their opening tie to Sweden. Riccardo Carapellese and Egisto Pandolfini scored for the Azzurri in that win.

The most recent meeting between the two sides was at the 2004 Olympics in Greece. Paraguay won 1-0 thanks to Fredy Bareiro’s 14^th minute strike.  Several players in the current Italian team represented their country at the 2004 Olympics- Daniele de Rossi, Alberto Gilardino, Andrea Pirlo and Giorgio Chiellini to name a few. Italy reached the semifinals of that event, while Paraguay went one step further and made it to the finals. Both the teams had their dreams of Olympic glory shattered by eventual winners Argentina.
