The defending world champions booked their place in next year's World Cup finals with a hard fought 2-2 draw against Republic of Ireland on Saturday. Ireland had taken an early lead through Glenn Whelan but Mauro Camoranesi equalized for the visitors midway through the first half. Sean St. Ledger looked to have won the game for Ireland by restoring their lead with just three minutes remaining but Alberto Gilardino scored in injury time to help his side secure a point.

Italy have been less than impressive in their qualifying campaign, managing just six wins from their nine games so far. Cyprus on the other hand will be looking to pull off another upset just four days after clinching their second win of the qualifying campaign. Having been already eliminated from the qualifying race, Angelos Anastasiadis' side put up a stunning display against Bulgaria on Saturday with two goals from Konstantinos Charalampidis and one a piece from Michael Constantinou and Efstathios Aloneftis helping them to a historic 4-1 victory.
