The Azzurri are missing a number of key players with Gianluigi Buffon, Gianluca Zambrotta, Fabio Grosso, Mauro Camoranesi, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Alberto Gilardino all out of action due to injuries. Giampaolo Pazzini and Riccardo Montolivo are expected to be called up after putting up a number of eye catching displays so far this season while Juventus’ Paolo De Ceglie is also expected to find a place in the squad.

The defending champions have struggled for consistency in the qualifying campaign and Marcello Lippi will be hopeful that his side can once again prove their critics wrong.

Meanwhile Rigobert Song and Geremi’s hopes of being on the plane to South Africa this summer have received a blow after coach Paul Le Guen dropped them for the friendly against Italy.

Also missing are Andre Bikey, Aurelien Chedjou, Paul Alo'o Efoulou, Guy Roland Ndy Assembe and Gilles Augustin Binya as Le Guen looks to improve on Cameroon’s disappointing performance in the African Nations Cup early this year.
