Italy will be hoping to avoid any more slip ups in the remainder of their qualifying campaign when they take on Bulgaria in their next World Cup qualification match on Wednesday. The defending champions have just managed to top their group with Republic of Ireland just one point behind in the second place. Italy had dropped two points against Bulgaria early in the campaign and coach Marcello Lippi will be keen to make sure that his side will book their place in next year's World Cup finals as soon as possible.

The Italians looked far from convincing in their 2-0 win over Georgia and will have to thank AC Milan defender Kakha Kaladze who scored two own goals to hand the World champions all three points. The Azzurri had not scored a single goal in their last three matches from the Confederations Cup and Lippi will be looking to ring some changes up front if his side is to register a home win against Bulgaria on Wednesday.

Bulgaria are the only other team remaining in contention to qualify for the play-offs from the group but Stanimir Stoilov's side are five points behind Ireland though they have a game in hand. However a defeat against Italy could all but put an end to their World Cup dreams with just two games remaining after the clash on Wednesday.
