Italy's loss to Egypt in Johannesburg means that Group B has been thrown open. A win for the Italians would have confirmed Brazil and Italy's places in the semifinals, but now we have a scenario where in one of the two could go out of the tournament at the group stage.

The 1-0 loss was Italy's first ever defeat against an African team. Should Italy draw, an Egypt win would see the world champions knocked out. If Italy and Egypt both win, it will come down to goal difference. If both of them draw, then Italy will go through because of their superior goal difference.

Brazil all but booked their spot in the semifinals with a fluent 3-0 win over the United States. Fiorentina midfielder Felipe Melo gave Brazil the lead, and Man City striker Robinho doubled it thirteen minutes later. A marvellous goal from Inter full back Maicon just after the hour mark put the result of the game beyond doubt.

If Brazil avoid defeat against Italy, they will qualify from Group B as one of the semifinalists. Should they lose, and Egypt win, then goal difference will become the deciding factor. Brazil's superior goal difference should see them through, unless they end up being thrashed by Italy.

The two teams met a few months back at the Emirates Stadium. Brazil won that game 2-0, with Robinho and Elano scoring for the Selecao.
