World Champions Italy got a rude awakening in their Group C opener against the Netherlands conceding three goals and going down tamely. Goals from Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wesley Sneijder and Giovanni van Bronckorst laid the Italians low.

Italy were already without Fabio Cannavaro and now appear to be unsure about the fitness of Marco Materazzi. Coach Roberto Donadoni will have to unravel the defensive puzzle pretty fast, else his team may very well be on its way home.

Romania had a satisfactory first outing managing to hold favorites France to a 0-0 draw. Victor Piturca's side showed no nerves despite this being their first finals appearance in eight years. Cristian Chivu was the hero in the Romanian defense standing tall even as Nicolas Anelka and Karim Benzema tried their best to break the defensive wall.

On the opposite end Daniel Niculae did cause some problems to the French defense, but neither side was able to break the deadlock. If Romania wins this one, then Italy go home, while they themselves will have a chance to progress further in Euro 2008.
