After a disappointing performance against Latvia that all but ended their hopes of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, Israel welcome Luxembourg to the Ramat Gan Stadium on Wednesday night for a Group 2 qualifier. Israel were beaten at home by Latvia in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Saturday. Queens Park defender Kaspar Gorkss was the hero for the visitors as his 59^th minute header proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Maccabi Haifa captain Yaniv Katan, playing his first game for the national side in two years, was the standout player for the hosts, who had quite a few opportunities to take the lead. Katan’s Maccabi Haifa team mate Deikel Kanan is suspended for the game against Luxembourg.

Luxembourg created a flutter last year when they upset Switzerland in Zurich, but since then, they have flattered to deceive. They drew 0-0 with Moldova in Chisinau on Saturday night, and took their points tally to five from seven games.

Gilles Bettmer had the two best chances of the game for Luxembourg, who had their coach Guy Hellers dismissed from the dugout after an argument with Lithuanian referee Gediminas Mazeika. Luxembourg can still mathematically qualify, but they will need some real luck to achieve that, with Greece and Switzerland awaiting them after this game.

When Israel met Luxembourg in October last year, Dror Kashtan’s side emerged 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Yossi Benayoun, Omer Golan and Salim Tuama.
