After a goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, Ipswich Town return to action in the Carling Cup when they take on Wigan Athletic on Wednesday.

Ipswich were not able to find the back of the net against Sheffield Wednesday, who recently conceded six against Reading. Jim Magilton chose to play Jonathan Stead as his solitary striker, with Kevin Lisbie coming on as an impact player late in the second half. Gareth McAuley recovered from a dead leg to take his place in the first 11. The Tractors have a decent home record, beating Reading, Leyton Orient and Colchester and losing to PNE. Both Orient and Colchester were beaten in the Carling Cup’s initial rounds. Danny Haynes scored two in the 4-1 over Orient, while Lisbie and Pablo Counago were on target against Colchester. Ipswich did not make it past the first round last year, losing to MK Dons on penalties.

Steve Bruce has built a decent team at Wigan, and his signing of Egyptian striker Amr Zaki on loan has paid rich dividends. Zaki has already drawn comparisons to Alan Shearer, and is high on confidence, having scored four times in Wigan’s last three games. Defender Ryan Taylor is targetting a Carling Cup return from his shin injury, while Swedish leftback Erik Edman is expected to make a comeback in October. And with the likes of Luis Valencia, Emil Heskey and Henri Camara in their side, Wigan can definitely pose an attacking threat to the Tractors. The Latics beat Notts County in the second round, where they lost to Hull City last season.
