After the demoralising old firm defeat at Ibrox last Saturday, which saw them drop seven points behind hated rivals Celtic, Rangers will have to regroup and show plenty of spirit against Inverness this coming weekend if they want to start the process of hauling themselves back into title contention. Despite playing quite well in the first half of a rather tepid old firm derby, Rangers just couldn’t convert any of the chances that came their way and as is the rule of thumb for such situations, Celtic scored a stunning goal against the run of play early in the second half to settle the game. It was a match more akin to a skating session than a game of football and the freezing pitch didn’t do much to help the players. Even so, with only three yellow cards, two to Celtic and one to Rangers, this was one of the “cleanest” old firm games in modern history, and both teams have to be commended for that.

The Gers travel up to Inverness on Sunday to face Caly Thistle in what is sure to be testing conditions, with more cold weather forecast. They really can’t think beyond the win if they harbour any aspirations at all of clawing back the seven point’s deficit that separates them from Celtic at the top of the SPL.

Inverness, for their part, are not enjoying the best of times at the moment and find themselves sharing bottom place in the league with Hamilton and Falkirk, all on seventeen points. Last Saturday Inverness travelled to Motherwell but were beaten by 3-2. Their home record is not very good at all with just one win and two draws from ten games, so if they want to realistically think of upsetting the Glaswegians on Sunday, a marked improvement is needed all round.
