The Reds have endured one of their worst seasons in recent history and find themselves out of the Champions League for the first time since 2002-03 when they finished fifth but had at least managed to win the Carling Cup. In spite of a poor season, manager Rafa Benitez’s future is in his own hands with financial implications meaning that the Liverpool board cannot afford to sack the Spanish coach.

Benitez has demanded answers on the club’s future from the current chairman Martin Broughton over the availability of transfer funds in the summer and is willing to stick with the club in spite of interest from both Real Madrid and Juventus.

Meanwhile Ian Dowie is expected to leave the club this summer with Hull City mulling a recall of Phil Brown who has been placed on a “gardening leave”. With the Tigers’ relegation confirmed, Brown could be handed the task of not only steering Hull to instant promotion, but also to cull the heavy wage bill as the club struggles to cope with a reported £35 million debt.
