Holland had an easy path to the World Cup, winning a group that also consisted of Norway, Scotland, Macedonia and Iceland. The Dutch won all eight of their qualifying games and finished a whopping fourteen points ahead of second placed Norway. They scored seventeen goals and did not concede a single goal at home in qualifying. On the road, they let in just two goals.

Denmark were beaten 3-0 by Holland when the two teams met at Euro 2000. Patrick Kluivert, Ronald de Boer and Bolo Zenden scored for the Dutch on that day in Rotterdam. Denmark had an extremely poor Euro 2000, losing all three of their games. They also failed to score a single goal. A more recent game between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw, with Ruud Van Nistelrooy scoring for the Dutch and Christian Poulsen equalising for Denmark.
