Hertha have had a miserable start to the season, and are rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga table with just three points from their first nine games of the season. They have lost their last eight Bundesliga games, a shocking fact considering they were in contention for the title last season.

Funkel has lost his first two games in charge of Hertha - they were beaten 3-1 by Hamburg before the international break, and 3-0 by fellow strugglers Nurnberg after it. Hertha drew their Europa League Group D opener 1-1 against Latvian side Ventspils, but lost 1-0 to Sporting Lisbon away from home on Match Day 2.

Heerenveen have the same number of points as Hertha going into this game. A hat trick from Liedson condemned them to a 3-2 defeat against Sporting at home on Match Day 1. They drew their second game 0-0 against Ventspils in Riga. Like Hertha, Heerenveen are also struggling in their domestic league.

Jan de Jonge’s men are third from bottom in the Eredivisie, and lost their weekend game 1-0 to PSV Eindhoven.  Danko Lazovic scored the winner for PSV nine minutes from time. The Frisian outfit have collected only eight points from ten games, and have only won once in the league in the last two months.
