Milan have been hit with a injury crisis recently, with several first team regulars like Kakha Kaladze, Gianluca Zambrotta and Andrea Pirlo out of action. However, even without these three, Carlo Ancelotti’s side comfortably beat Sampdoria 3-0, with Ronaldinho grabbing a brace. After losing to Genoa and Bologna in their first two games, Milan seem to have regained their touch, and have kept a clean sheet in their last four games. Milan beat Swiss side FC Zurich 4-1 on aggregate to reach the group stages. The likes of Nesta, Borriello and Inzaghi have recovered from their injuries, and that can only be good news for the Rossoneri.

Milan’s opponents on Thursday will be Trond Sollied’s Heerenveen, whose high point of the season has been a 5-2 thrashing of Ajax. They also dispatched Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal by the same margin in the home leg of their UEFA Cup clash, winning the tie 6-3 on aggregate. Heerenveen do seem to be a bit weak defensively- they have conceded in all but one of their games this season- the exception being a Dutch Cup game against Maastricht. In their weekend Eredivisie game, they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Roda JC. Christian Grindheim and Arnor Smarason were on target for Heerenveen. The Frisian club’s two biggest individual players are Croatian international Danijel Pranjic, a reported winter target for Real Madrid, and former Feyenoord and Auxerre forward Bonaventure Kalou.
