Last terms Gold Cup's semi finalists were on the mark right from the start as they out up a strong showing against Panama. Loic Loval opened the scoring in the 33rd minute for Guadeloupe before David Fleurival doubled the lead 10 minutes later. Nelson Barahona got one back for Panama in the 68th minute but the Central American champions were unable to pierce Guadeloupe's defense for a second time leaving the Gwada Boys with a vital win in the opening match.

The victory means that Guadeloupe could progress to the next round on Thursday should they manage to secure a win against Nicaragua. With his side scheduled to take on Mexico in what will be a tough final group game, coach Roger Salnot will be hoping that his side can book their place in the quarter finals on Thursday itself.

Meanwhile Nicaragua started their debut Gold Cup campaign with a hard fought 2-0 loss against Mexico. Mexico took the lead thanks to a fortuitous penalty that was put away by Luis Noriega while Pablo Barrera secured all three points with a second goal in the 86th minute.

Nicaragua coach Otoniel Olivas said that he was disappointed with the result but was satisfied with his side's effort and expressed confidence that they can pull off an upset in their remaining two matches starting with a win against Guadeloupe before ending the group stage against Panama.
