With their world cup qualification place hanging in balance, Greece produced a superlative performance to trash Latvia by a 5-2 margin on Saturday. Theofanis Gekas netted four goals, while Giorgos Samaras scored the other one as Greece swept past Latvia. Both the goals for the latter were scored by Maris Verpakovskis. In a game that was expected to be tight, Gekas proved to be the difference between the two teams as Greece made it to the second spot in the group with 17 points from 9 games.
Barring an unforeseen disaster Greece are well on their way to the 2010 world cup and will hope to make it definite on Wednesday. Greece coach Otto Rehhagel will be without striker Angelos Charisteas, but defenders Sotiris Kyrgiakos and Avraam Papadopoulos should be back for this one. The return of Vassilis Torossidis from a leg injury is also a bonus for the team.
Meanwhile Luxembourg will hope to end their campaign with a decent showing. The team is fifth in Group 2 with 5 points from 9 games. Last weekend they lost to Switzerland by a 0-3 margin; a win that has almost guaranteed a place in the finals for the Swiss.
Philippe Senderos scored a brace and another goal from Benjamin Huggel saw Luxembourg sink to their sixth loss of the campaign.
