The Germans go into the tournament without their captain Michael Ballack who was injured in the FA Cup final while first choice keeper Rene Adler is also out with a rib injury. Christian Traesch, Simon Rolfes and Heiko Westermann are the other notable absentees due to injury.

There are no such injury concerns for Australia with Rhys Williams being the only player to miss out due to injury. However third choice keeper Brad Jones is likely to miss out on the tournament after he was granted leave by the team following the news that his youngest son was diagnosed with leukemia.

While Germany are clear favorites to secure a comfortable victory, Australia will be keen to prove their doubters wrong with the team being billed as the whipping boys of one of the toughest groups in the competition.
