Germany cruised through qualifying, winning eight of their ten games. They drew both their games against the Finns, but managed to beat all the other teams in their group, including Guus Hiddink’s Russia. The German backline conceded only five goals throughout qualifying, four of which were scored by the Finns. Germany also scored 26 times in qualifying, at a rate of 2.6 goals per game.

Serbia played their first World Cup game as an independent nation against Ghana last week. They had competed in the 2006 World Cup as Serbia and Montenegro, but lost all three group games on that occasion. Ominously enough, their second group game then saw them finish at the receiving end of a 6-0 scoreline.
