Germany will be looking to make history by lifting the UEFA European U-21 Championship for the first time when they play England in the final on Monday. Going into the semi final clash against Italy as underdogs, Germany pulled off an upset by sneaking in a narrow 1-0 win after Andreas Beck smashed home a stinging long range effort three minutes into the second half. The Italians tried to stage a comeback late in the game and though they managed to create a number of chances, Germany held on to their slender lead thanks to some brilliant keeping by Manuel Neuer.

This is the first time that Germany has qualified to the finals of the tournament with their last appearance being back in 1982 when they beat the erstwhile USSR 9-3 on aggregate but lost out in the final to England. The Germans will be keen to avenge that defeat and lift their first ever UEFA Euro 2009 U-21 Championship trophy.

England on the other hand were almost knocked out of the tournament by hosts Sweden who staged a remarkable comeback in the second half. The English side looked on course for a comfortable victory after taking a 3-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Martin Cranie and Nedum Onuoha before an own goal by Mattias Bjarsmyr.

However Sweden struck back in the second half with top scorer Marcus Berg leading the comeback in the 68th minute while Ola Toivonen further reduced the deficit before Berg equalized in the 81st minute. Berg undid the excellent work during normal time as he missed his spot kick in the penalty shootout while Guillermo Molins missed another to hand England a 5-4 penalty victory.

Manager Stuart Pearce admitted that his side will have to put up an improved performance if they are to win their third European U-21 tournament. Both the teams have already met in the group stage with Jack Rodwell canceling out Gonzalo Castro's 5th minute goal.
