Path to the Final

Germany

When Germany were unable to raise their game to match Croatia's in the second group game, pundits were quick to write off the team saying they would be no match for Portugal if they made it to the quarterfinals. Michael Ballack rose to the occasion and fired his side home against Austria to keep the date with Portugal in the quarterfinals.

Germany were without coach Joachim Loew for the quarterfinal as he was banned from the touchline. However they rose to the occasion and clinched the tie 3-2 with goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack, while Portugal hit back through Nuno Gomes and Helder Postiga.

In the semifinal, Germany were up against a resilient Turkey who had ousted Croatia despite missing their star players. A tense tie looked to be heading into extra time after Ugur Boral, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Semih Senturk had cancelled each other's strikes.

In the 90th minute, Phillip Lahm struck to take Germany to the European Championships final in what will be their first appearance in the final of a major tournament in 12 years.

Spain

Spain have set Euro 2008 alight with some magical displays. They are also the only team remaining at the business end that has won all the games played so far in the tournament.

Spain were powerful against Russia, Sweden and Greece and positively humbled Italy in their quarterfinal clash although it went to the penalties.

In the semifinals, Spain crushed Russia 3-0 thanks to goals from Xavi Hernández, Daniel Güiza and David Silva. Coach Luis Aragones knows the final will not be easy, but with the kind of squad he has at his disposal, it should be a cracker of a game.

Spain have the reputation of always being the bridesmaid, but never the bride. Fans are hoping this will change on Sunday.

Players to watch out for

There's a surfeit of star power on both sides.

If Germany have Michael Ballack, Lukas Podolski, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose and Philip Lahm, Spain boast of Fernando Torres, David Villa, Iker Casillas, Cesc Fabregas Andreas Iniesta and Xavi.

Euro 2008 final Team News

The big news is that David Villa will miss the final after a muscle strain that forced him to out of Spain's semifinal win over Russia.

For Germany Simon Rolfes is in doubt after sustaining a head injury.
