Italy currently lead the group with 14 points from six games; just one point ahead of Republic of Ireland who have also played a game more. Italy coach Marcello Lippi will hope his team can collect all three points on offer in this game.

Lippi has named a strong 23-man squad for this game, but has surprisingly chosen to omit Luca Toni from his line-up. Gennaro Gattuso misses out with an ankle injury, while winger Marco Marchionni has been called up for the first time in three years.

Lippi has also focused on youth promoting Domenico Criscito and midfielder Claudio Marchisio from the under-21 squad. Nicola Legrottaglie is back after being rested for last month’s friendlies, but there is no place for veteran strikers Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Del Piero.

Italy take on Bulgaria next week in a game that could ease their passage to South Africa should they win it.

Meanwhile Georgia lie at the bottom of this group with three points from seven games. With no hope of qualifying, Georgia will now focus on the Euro 2012 qualification campaign next year.
