Fulham won on the opening day of the Premiership for the first time in six seasons as they beat troubled Pompey 1-0 at Fratton Park. Bobby Zamora scored the only goal of the game, deflecting in a Clint Dempsey effort on 13 minutes. Pompey tried hard for an equaliser, but never really tested the Cottagers enough.

Fulham, who were lead by Roy Hodgson to their highest ever finish in the Premier League last season, beat Lithuanian side FK Vetra in the previous round. They beat Vetra 3-0 in Vilnius, with Bobby Zamora, Danny Murphy and Ki Hyon Seol scoring, and defeated them by the same margin in the return leg in London. Dickson Etuhu opened the scoring, while Andy Johnson added a brace late in the game.

Amkar Perm also had their best ever finish in the Russian Premier League last season. The Red-Blacks, tipped by many as contenders for relegation, finished an impressive fourth, ahead of the likes of Zenit, Spartak and Lokomotiv Moscow.

Amkar's domestic form this season has not been very encouraging though. Dimitar Dimitrov's men are currently fourth from bottom with 18 points, and lost their most recent game 4-2 to Zenit. Star striker Martin Kushev put Amkar 2-0 up within the first fifteen minutes, but Zenit hit back through two goals in either half to end up winning 4-2.
