France got their stuttering qualifying campaign back on track on Saturday with a hard fought 1-0 win over Lithuania in Kaunas. Bayern Munich striker Franck Ribery was the star for the Les Bleus with a stunning strike from 30 meters out midway through the second half on 67 minutes. Lassana Diarra started the move, passing onto Yoann Gorcuff, who found Ribery just outside the penalty area.

Lithuania goalkeeper Zydrunas Karcemarskas could only get his fingertips to the stunning drive from Ribery, which was enough to hand France a well-deserved win. The win took France to the third place in Group 7 of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers behind Lithuania and Serbia.

 

 

The points also eased pressure on coach Raymond Domenech, who is being jeered by French fans for his supposedly inept tactics. Domenech was also boosted by support from French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes, who stressed that they would stick with the coach till the end of the qualifying campaign regardless of the results.

Domenech has called up Loic Remy and Peguy Luyindula as cover for Jimmy Briand, who suffered a serious knee injury during training last Wednesday. Guillaume Hoarau has been called up to replace Nicolas Anelka, who is out with a toe injury.

 

 

Meanwhile Lithuania coach Jose Couceiro will hope his side can take revenge in Paris and move well clear of France in Group Seven. However there are injury worries ahead of this game as Marius Stankevicius is out with a foot injury, while Linas Pilibaitis is suspended.
